I’ll be at the Cherberg Building in Olympia for today’s 1:30pm hearing – I urge you join me (in person or by Zoom).
In 25 years, 77 ballot measures campaigns have turned in over 25 million voter signatures to the Secretary of State.
In all that time, not a single invalid signature has ever counted – the Secretary of State – R or D – has made sure of that.
THE INITIATIVE PROCESS IS UTILIZED BY LIBERALS AND CONSERVATIVES — SB 5382 KILLS IT FOR ALL OF US
Over the past 25 years, there have been 32 liberal initiatives and 45 conservative initiatives that have qualified for a public vote.
Of those, voters passed 21 liberal initiatives and 23 conservative initiatives.
BOTH SIDES USE IT AND BOTH SIDES WILL LOSE IT IF SB 5382 PASSES.
Under SB 5382, the Secretary of State will be REQUIRED to reject perfectly valid voter signatures if the signer’s address if blank or doesn’t match the address on their original registration form.
Under SB 5382, the Secretary of State will be REQUIRED to throw away petition sheets filled with perfectly valid voter signatures if the circulator doesn’t provide their printed name, address, city, county, and swear under penalty of law — 364 days in jail or $5000 fine — that the voter signatures on the front of the petition are valid (which they can’t possibly know).
That’s why Steve Hobbs (Democrat Secretary of State) and Sam Reed (Republican former Secretary of State) both strongly oppose SB 5382.
