Reject SB 5181 and DO NOT GUT the Parents Rights Initiative

I urge EVERY LEGISLATOR to reject Senate Bill 5181 because it GUTS the Parents Rights Initiative — a ballot measure that overwhelmingly passed JUST LAST YEAR.

Respect the voters’ decision.

Parents have a fundamental right to know what’s happening in their kids’ lives. Parents do not give up that right when their kid is at school. Any effort by the government to interfere with that fundamental right is completely unacceptable. 

100’s of thousands of citizens from all across Washington sponsored, promoted, and passed into law the Parents Rights Initiative. It clearly set forth the hierarchy of responsibility — Parents first, government second.

For over 100 years, the initiative process has existed to make changes when the Legislature doesn’t listen. Here the people said they want these policies to take priority over current law.

It is maddening to hear about confusion about such a straightforward initiative. 

SB 5181 is being pushed not because the initiative is confusing but because you want the government to have more rights over children than their parents. That’s not what the people want.

Respect the people’s right to initiative by REJECTING SB 5181.
