Infuriating.

Maddening.

Don’t you hate it when politicians decide to take more of your money without asking your permission?

And that anger is especially intense when when citizen input IS EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED.

That’s what happened recently and we’re only learning about it now AFTER THE FACT.

Pasco’s politicians had a secret meeting on August 25th and each of them made a decision to raise taxes on citizens and each of them made a decision on which taxes to increase on citizens.

And they’re doing it WITHOUT A PUBLIC VOTE.

Whether you’re from Pasco or not, this affects YOU.

Because …

When SOME politicians ANYWHERE get away with secretly deciding to take away money from citizens, it blazes a trail for politicians EVERYWHERE to do the same.

Here’s the way it’s supposed to work:

1) Politicians put out a public announcement IN ADVANCE of making a taxing decision. 

2) In the announcement, they tell the citizens there is a public hearing coming up (date, time, location).

3) At the hearing, citizens are given the opportunity to give testimony and input.

4) Politicians listen to what the people have to say (well, at least they pretend to) and citizens and politicians get to ask questions and elicit answers.

5) Politicians then thank the citizens for their advice and announce when they will make a decision.

6) Finally, at a public hearing, citizens attend and watch and learn how each politician feels about it and how each politician votes on it.

That’s the right way.

NONE OF THAT HAPPENED HERE.

At an August 25th council meeting (reported by the Tri-City Herald today) WHERE CITIZEN TESTIMONY WAS EXPLICITLY PROHIBITED, Pasco’s politicians decided they were going to raise taxes and then each of them said which tax they wanted increased — local car tab taxes or local sales taxes. 

They were given a presentation by staff and then all of them said they were going to raise taxes and which of those 2 they preferred. 

And regardless of which tax gets increased, they’re doing it WITHOUT A VOTE OF THE PEOPLE.

I ask EVERYONE to send an email to those Pasco politicians.

PASCO POLITICIANS: SHAME ON YOU! NO MORE SECRET MEETINGS, NO MORE TAXES. Ferguson and the Democrats raised taxes $40.2 billion this year.

We can’t afford any more.

DON’T RAISE TAXES.

And don’t do it without a vote of the people. 

And no matter what, DO NOT decide ANYTHING until you hear from the citizens first.

Stop ignoring the will of the people — the last $30 car tabs initiative got over 72% support from YOUR voters.

NONE OF YOU GOT ELECTED W/ ANYTHING CLOSE TO THAT LEVEL OF VOTER SUPPORT!

Let me close my remarks by expressing my appreciation to Tim Eyman for putting such a bright spotlight on your blatant corruption and I’m going to do my best to join him at your Mon, Sept 15th 7pm council meeting and provide public testimony (either in person or online) against what you’re doing.

AGAIN, SHAME ON YOU!
