I absolutely hate it when governments say “We encourage citizen participation and welcome public input” but then they have meeting where they explicitly PROHIBIT people from talking or impose all sorts of burdensome hurdles.

Such is the case in Pasco.

I wrote about it last week: “Don’t you hate it when politicians decide to take more of your money without asking your permission? And that anger is especially intense when when citizen input IS EXPRESSLY PROHIBITED. That’s what happened recently and we’re only learning about it now AFTER THE FACT.

Pasco’s politicians had a secret meeting on August 25th and each of them made a decision to raise taxes on citizens and each of them made a decision on which taxes to increase on citizens. And they’re doing it WITHOUT A PUBLIC VOTE.”

Well, they’ve had several meetings since then and at none of them were the citizens allowed to speak.

Only this Monday can the citizens actually talk. Each person gets 3 minutes to publicly communicate w/ the mayor and city council.

And of course they’ve made it really difficult.

IN-PERSON: Pasco City Hall, 525 N 3rd Ave, Pasco. I’m driving over that day so I can provide my comments in person. I invite you to join me. The council meeting starts at 7pm and the public comment portion is first up — in other words, the people are heard before any other business is conducted. Again, you’ll get 3 minutes to speak. 

REMOTELY: They don’t make it easy but don’t let that stop you. I urge you to jump through their hoops so you can provide them with your 3 minutes of remote commentary using Teams (Microsoft’s version of ZOOM). Here’s how:

Step 1: Click on the image below and it’ll forward you to their on-line form that you have to fill out — the image below is what you’ll see – when you get their form, type in your name, city, click the box marked City Council, Afor Agenda Topic, type in: TAX INCREASES IMPOSED W/OUT A PUBLIC VOTE, type in your phone # and email, and then hit SUBMIT.

Step 2: They’ll email you a link and you’ll need to follow their instructions on Monday. I recommend logging in 10 minutes before 7pm in case there are any problems. INTENTIONAL ROADBLOCK #1 — the link they send out is unique to each person which prevents me from providing everyone with the link in advance.

Step 3: INTENTIONAL ROADBLOCK #2. You gotta fill out the above form before Monday, 4pm. The meeting is at 7pm so why the heck do they need 3 hours to process requests from citizens who want to participate? They clearly want 3 hours to coordinate their responses to citizens who are commenting. 

DIRTY DOGS!

Whether you’re from Pasco or not, this affects YOU.

Because …

When SOME politicians ANYWHERE get away with secretly deciding to take away money from citizens, it blazes a trail for politicians EVERYWHERE to do the same.
