Reject anti-initiative bill SB 5382 – get your dirty, grubby hands off the initiative process. It’s ours, not yours. LEAVE IT ALONE.
Copy & paste this (or something like this) into the body of the email (tell ’em how you feel):
For 110 years, the Secretary of State verifies a voter’s signature on initiative petitions – if the signature is valid, it counts. If it’s not, it gets rejected.
SB 5382 changes that common sense policy and forces the Secretary of State to reject PERFECTLY VALID VOTER SIGNATURES — that’s crazy.
Do not copy Oregon — it’s been an abysmal failure:
In addition, when a bill infringes on a 1st Amendment right — which petitioning clearly is — to be constitutional, the bill must address a demonstrated, not theoretical, problem IN THIS STATE.
This info — provided by the Secretary of State — shows there isn’t one.
There is no problem in Washington state.
But even if there was a demonstrable problem IN OUR STATE — which there isn’t — to be constitutional, the burden imposed by the bill must be “narrowly tailored” to address the problem in the least burdensome way possible.
No way does SB 5382 do that.
ON EACH AND EVERY PETITION SHEET, the bill requires the person collecting signatures to handwrite on EACH PETITION SHEET the date, their name, address, city, state, and zip code. But even that isn’t enough — the person MUST swear under penalty of perjury that EVERY PERSON who signed that petition sheet is a valid voter (which is of course unknowable).
That is a tremendous burden.
And for what? To address a problem that doesn’t exist.
To be clear: if that person does not fill out that petition sheet correctly, then SB 5382 FORCES the Secretary of State TO TOSS IN THE GARBAGE petitions filled with perfectly valid signatures of interested voters.
Get your dirty, grubby hands off the initiative process.
It’s ours, not yours. LEAVE IT ALONE.
I urge every legislator to fight back against this attack on the citizens’ right to initiative by REJECTING SENATE BILL 5382.
