Initiative superstar Brian Heywood has just 40 days left to collect 400,000 voter signatures by the July 2nd deadline.
That will only happen if EVERYONE does their part.
He’s counting on volunteers — ALL OF YOU / US — to collect voter signatures so he doesn’t have to pay his paid petitioners to collect as many.
At a recent event, he quantified it:
“Every signature collected by a volunteer saves the campaign $5.”
EASY MATH: get 20 signatures on a petition sheet and you’ve effectively provided $100 to the campaign. Fill out 2 sheets, you’ve given them $200, etc.

For every $100 you donate, you’ve guaranteed the campaign will be able to pay a paid petitioner to collect those 20 signatures for you.
Signatures and money, money and signatures – that’s all that matters for the next 40 days.
BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT: when it comes to collecting signatures, PROMOTE THE VOTE, NOT THE ISSUE.
I love petitioning.
I love talking with people and giving them the chance to exercise their right to petition their government for change.
I love the people who sign and I’m totally fine w/ those who don’t.
I’m thoroughly entertained by the hecklers and the folks who make snide comments.
But here’s the catch — I’m not normal.
I’m pretty sure that for normal people — like you — asking strangers to sign a petition is hard.
Convincing a voter to sign a petition is really hard.
You’re asking them to put their name and other personal information on a government document.
That’s a big deal.
But an initiative — NO MATTER HOW POPULAR — never qualifies for a public vote unless A LOT of regular people care enough to ask A LOT of strangers to sign a petition.
HOW DO YOU DO THAT?
1) Keep a blank petition with you at all times over the next 40 days.
2) With a big smile on your face, ask a simple question: “Are you a registered voter, sir?” “Are you a registered voter, young lady?”
If no, reply “all good, have a great day.”
If yes …
3) “Have you had a chance to sign our petition yet?”
Their natural response: “What’s it about?”
4) “Olympia just imposed a new income tax and we’re trying to get it on the ballot to let the people decide.”
MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN SAY:
“Just trying to get it on the ballot.”
“Signing the petition doesn’t mean you’re for or against the income tax, it just means you support letting the people decide. Just trying to get it on the ballot.”
MOST IMPORTANT THING YOU CAN DO:
Let them read the petition and as they do, give them a pen.
Reassure them that signing the petition doesn’t lock them into voting one way or the other.
“Just trying to get this on the ballot – July 2 is coming up fast and signing it REALLY helps make sure the voters get the final say on this.”
WAR STORY TO ILLUSTRATE MY POINT:
In 2010, local politicians in my hometown of Mukilteo voted to install those obnoxious red light ticketing cameras in our community.
I really hate those things.
So I teamed up with a handful of allies and started a signature drive to put it on the ballot.
At the top of the petition, it originally read: BanCams
Some people signed, but A LOT more wouldn’t because they didn’t know enough about it to feel comfortable signing the petition.
So we reprinted the petitions and put a new headline on it:
From that point on, even folks in favor of ticketing cameras signed because it’s absolutely true that signing the petition only gets it on the ballot.
And that’s when this t-shirt first appeared:

Hi Tim I also think a list of locations where voters can sign the initiative like I did recently . I believe it would be helpful . I wonder if the number of signatures would increase as well. Thanks.
