Tomorrow morning (Friday, May 9), the AG’s Domestic Extremism Task Force is having a public meeting.

At their previous meeting, the moderator announced that the AG’s staff had unilaterally changed the Task Force’s citizen comment policy and they’d no longer allow citizens to speak during the public comment period of their meetings. 

I’ve subsequently learned that NONE of the Task Force members were told about this change and so there was no discussion and no vote on this new censorship policy. 

Please send an email RIGHT NOW and urge them to reverse the AG’s censorship policy and allow citizens to speak again. 

I’ve done some additional research and so the email list below is even more accurate.

At your previous meeting, the moderator announced that the AG’s staff had unilaterally changed the Task Force’s policy and would be prohibiting citizens from speaking during the public comment period of your meetings. 

I’ve subsequently learned that NONE OF YOU were told about this change and so there was no discussion and no vote on this new censorship policy. 

No other government – not the legislature, no county council, no city council, no school board, not even Sound Transit — has ever done this.

At tomorrow’s meeting, I urge you to reverse the censorship policy unilaterally imposed by the AG’s staff and allow citizens to once again speak during the public comment period of your meetings.

Prohibiting citizens from speaking at public meetings of your Domestic Extremism Task Force violates the Open Public Meetings Act. 

Citizens provided verbal comments at your November meeting and at your January meeting but were prohibited from doing so at your March meeting.

In the Charter for the November meeting (and in its Agenda) and in the Charter for the January meeting (and in its Agenda) it specifically said the Task Force “welcomes both written and verbal comments” from regular citizens. 

Not allowing citizens to speak during the public comment period of a public meeting violates the principles of open government.

Task force members — I ask you to overrule the AG’s staff and vote to allow regular citizens to once again provide verbal comment at your public meetings.

And to AG Nick Brown: you should reverse this censorship policy.
